Introduction to Recovery in Mental Health

At this two part training, you will:

  • Gain a basic knowledge of Recovery in Mental Health and the history of the Recovery movement

  • Understand the difference between the traditional service model and the Recovery model and the contrasting roles of staff, individuals and families in each model
  • Recognize the importance of People-First language and use it correctly
  • Practice the skill of asking respectful, recovery-oriented questions in a conversation
  • Identify ways in which the mental health system and society consciously and unconsciously stigmatizes individuals with mental illness
  • Recognize actions and treatment options which show support for Recovery
  • Be able to name specific ways to incorporate the Guiding Principles and Elements of Recovery
  • Understand that people can and do recover from mental illness

DATES and TIMES:

  • Session 1, Fridays, March 25 and April 1, 2011, 9:00am-11:30am
  • Session 2, Wednesdays, June 15 and June 22, 2011, 9:00am-11:30am

    FEE: $36 for provider staff.  Free for families, consumers, and college students (This is $6 per hour for 6 hours of training)

    Intermediate Recovery Training Modules 1-4

    Intermediate Recovery Training is a highly interactive, participatory series of four training modules that teach specific skills to support an individual's journey of recovery. 

    Each module covers a different topic.  Module 1 (Validated Personhood) and Module 3 (Connection, Community Integration & Social Relationships) are given as one 3-hour block.  Module 2 (Person-Centered Decision Making & Choice) and Module 4 (Supporting Individual Preferences in Basic Life Resources) are offered separately.  The modules are not sequential, you can take them in any order.  However, you need to take Introduction to Recovery Training before signing up for any Intermediate Recovery module.

    Module 1: Validated Personhood
    When: Wednesday, April 6, 2011 1:00pm-4:00pm
    Where: Public Safety Center, 101 Champ Blvd., Manheim «Map it!»
    For Whom: Mandatory for MH and Crisis staff; also open to consumers, family members & providers.
    Presenters: Diana Fullem, Director Recovery Insight and Marty Mohn, Survey Specialist, Recovery Connections
    Summary:

  • Compare and contrast traditional service planning with recovery-based person-centered planning;
  • practice using conversational dialogues and person-centered informational gathering tools;
  • learn ways to incorporate the person’s strengths, preferences, goals, lifestyles and interests in the planning process;
  • find ways to include the individual’s own words in any plans that are written.

    Provider Fee: $21 for provider staff; free to consumers, family members, and college students.
    Prerequisite: You must have attended Introduction to Recovery in Mental Health before attending Intermediate Recovery Training. Modules can be taken in any order.


    Module 2: Person-Centered Decision Making & Choice
    When: Thursday, April 14, 2011 1:00pm-4:00pm

    Presenters: John Stygler, Mental Health Program Specialist, MH/MR/EI
    Summary:

    Presenters: Mary Bowen, Certified Peer Specialist, Recovery Connections, and Becky Mohr, MH Program Specialist, Lancaster County MH/MR/EI
    Summary:

  • Explore the concept of community.
  • Look at the role individuals play in a community and the value of belonging to a community.
  • Complete a circle of support.
  • Identify resources to help individuals connect to their communities.
  • Use a Community Resources Guide.

    Provider Fee: $21 for provider staff; free to consumers, family members, and college students
    Prerequisite: You must have attended Introduction to Recovery in Mental Health before attending. Intermediate Recovery Training. Modules can be taken in any order.


    Module 4: Supporting Individual Preferences in Basic Life Resources
    When: Wednesday, April 27,2011 1:00pm-4:00pm
    Where: Public Safety Center, 101 Champ Blvd., Manheim «Map it!»
    For Whom: Mandatory for MH and Crisis staff; also open to consumers, family members
    Presenters: Crystal Tillman, Recovery Trainer, and April Leaman, Keystone Services
    Summary:

  • Learn a nine-step decision-making process that is person-centered;
  • practice ways to support an individual in making choices about employment, housing, education, and volunteering without taking over the process;
  • use language which encourages choice-making;
  • work with a risk/benefits tool that assists in choice-making.

    Provider Fee: $21 for provider staff; free to consumers, family members, and college students
    Prerequisite: You must have attended Introduction to Recovery in Mental Health before attending Intermediate Recovery Training. Modules can be taken in any order.
